چکیده

The hydrogen isotope ratio of the dinoflagellate sterol dinosterol (4a,23,24-trimethyl-5a-cholest-22E-en-3b-ol) was measured in suspended particles and surface sediments from the Chesapeake Bay estuary in order to evaluate the influence of salinity on hydrogen isotope fractionation. D/H fractionation was found to decrease by 0.99 ± 0.23& per unit increase in salinity over the salinity range 10–29 PSU, a similar decrease to that observed in a variety of lipids from hypersaline ponds on Christmas Island (Kiribati). We hypothesize that the hydrogen isotopic response to salinity may result from diminished exchange of water between algal cells and their environment, lower growth rates and/or increased production of osmolytes at high salinities. Regardless of the mechanism, the consistent sign and magnitude of dinosterol dD response to changing salinity should permit qualitative to semi-quantitative reconstructions of past salinities from sedimentary dinosterol dD values. 2010 Elsevier Ltd. Eutrophication and Carbon Sources in Chesapeake Bay Over the Last 2700 Yr: Human Impacts in Context

To compare natural variability and trends in a developed estuary with human-influenced patterns, stable isotope ratios ( C and N) were measured in sediments from five piston cores collected in Chesapeake Bay. Mixing of terrestrial and algal carbon sources primarily controls patterns of Corg profiles, so this proxy shows changes in estuary productivity and in delivery of terrestrial carbon to th...

Accomplishments and Challenges in the Chesapeake Bay Program: Watershed and Estuary Models

The reduction of nutrient over-enrichment (eutrophication) is the most important undertaking in the restoration of the Chesapeake Bay ecosystem. Efforts toward this end are guided and evaluated though extensive use of linked simulation models of the airshed, watershed and estuary. These models track the inputs of nutrients through the watershed and into the bay and predict the consequences to w...

Habitat Affects Survival of Translocated Bay Scallops, Argopecten irradians concentricus (Say 1822), in Lower Chesapeake Bay

Bay scallop (Argopecten irradians) populations existed in Chesapeake Bay until 1933, when they declined dramatically due to a loss of seagrass habitat. Since then, there have been no documented populations within the Bay. However, some anecdotal observations of live bay scallops within the lower Bay suggest that restoration of the bay scallop is feasible. We therefore tested whether translocate...

Differences in juvenile trophic niche for two coastal fish species that use marine and estuarine nursery habitats

In coastal regions, age-0 juveniles of many fish species are capable of recruiting to either marine or estuarine nursery habitats, yet the ecological consequences for cohorts that use marine versus estuarine nurseries is poorly understood. In the present study, stable isotope (δ13C, δ15N) and stomach contents data were used to compare trophic ecology associated with differential habitat use for...

Note Common Reed Phragmites Australis Occurrence and Adjacent Land Use along Estuarine Shoreline in Chesapeake Bay

We completed a shoreline survey of Phragmites occurrence and adjacent land use along more than 8,400 km of shoreline in the Maryland and Virginia portions of the Chesapeake Bay and its tidal tributaries. Phragmites occurred along 14.6% of Maryland estuarine shoreline in the mid-to-upper portion of Chesapeake Bay, but along only 2.0% of the surveyed Virginia shoreline in the mid-to-lower portion...
